WKSG’s Best of 2009

wordpress doesn’t support youtube playlist embedding, so you’ll have to click through. sorry! but you can do so by following the above link or the link to my youtube channel somewhere on the right.

it’s got some of my favorite songs and videos of the year. I’ll list them after the jump so you can see if you’re sufficiently interested or if you feel like reading my thoughts.

super haze

who’d have thought we’d see the day that a Columbia artist remixing another Columbia artist would make it on Pitchfork? Toro y Moi has put together a nice little remix of Washed Out’s “Feel it All Around” that you can download over at Pitchfork. makes me feel like laying in the sun by a lake and almost makes me miss Columbia.

I’m thinking a hazy little podcast might come together soon so keep your eyes and ears open.

and don’t forget to tune in tonight at 8 pm!

where have I been?

meonmountainI’ve been pretty busy, head in the clouds, you know how it goes. anyway I don’t have much to say tonight but I will link to this great new Family Portrait track that GvB put out while I was hiking and building stuff in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina.

in other news, it’s back to Charleston in 9 days. I’m like an excited puppy.

AND Toro Y Moi hits up Charleston a few days after, the 25th I think, at the Recovery Room which is a bar but apparently it’ll be 18-up. I’m excited for that too. seems like new tracks go up every other week on his myspace. also noticed a sweet mention on Ed Droste’s twitter. lucky kid!

he’ll also be playing in Cola the night before and is hitting up a lot of the East Coast at the moment as well as tearing up the blogosphere with that Michael Jackson cover from Chum Onah which I haven’t completely gotten through yet but is on my to-do list.

ALSO you can get his latest cassette, Body Angles, from Mirror Universe Tapes. (hey Ben)

CORRECTION: the Toro y Moi show is now only 21+. lame x 10.

july mixtape

as promised, here is your July podcast. this one’s pretty groovy, if I do say so myself. I ended up having to rework the whole thing at the last minute but oh well.

also, the whopping one vote in the poll was for “109,” so it ended up on the mix. thank you, one voter.

ok folks, so here’s the dilemma. I’ve finally got a tracklist for the July mixtape BUT I can’t decide between two very good Toro Y Moi songs.

one is vintage Toro Y Moi (circa 2007), dancier, way less fuzzy, and is pretty much absent from the Internet as far as I can tell. I got it from a friend who got it from a friend, etc. way back when. it’s called “Your Skin.” the other is the b-side to the super-hyped “Blessa,” “109.” fuzzier, poppier, and very much current.

simplified: Cut Copy-esque vs. Ariel Pink-esque.

I’ll probably just put “109” up as it fits with the others better but if you insist, maybe I’ll put it on. or both! (my only real qualm is that it may not have been available for free and I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes here)

EDIT: turns out “Your Skin” got re-named to “Left Alone At Night” and was released earlier this year. you can stream it/buy it here.

obsessions: toro y moi

Posted in obsessions with tags on June 6, 2009 by Kayla

I’ve had an eye out for Toro Y Moi for a few years now. Chaz Bundick hails from Columbia and is the lead singer for the Heist and the Accomplice, which a friend of mine shared with me in high school. although I wasn’t crazy about the band’s last album (their first and second albums always make me think of some of my better afternoons in high school, though, and are pretty great), I love where Toro Y Moi has been going.

apparently he’s been blowing up in the blogosphere as of late, so let me jump on the bandwagon. Gorilla vs. Bear has two songs up (new to me) and a lot of stuff on his myspace that I haven’t heard either.

radio note: I played a few tracks on Poolside Chatter last year and you can expect more next year although it will probably be older stuff because CofCradio’s music library is kind of lame.

copyright note: I stole that rad picture from some blog.
