tin and string

a droning noise jam for your Sunday morning hangover, courtesy of Ashtray Navigations and the FMA. windy and slightly eerie, would make the perfect score to an adaptation of one of Lovecraft’s short stories.

weird monday

in honor of the FMA’s new embedd-able player, some new music from Tonstartssbandht (that is a pain to type out).

perfect if you’re in the mood for some weird ambient goodness. you should remember them from the amazing “Black Country.” I think it was on one of the summer mixes I had up.

let’s hope this thing works!

the last rose of summer

Posted in free music with tags , , on September 2, 2009 by Kayla

a drowsily haunting tune for your Wednesday night: “The Last Rose of Summer” by Moore and Davis. it’s from 1922 and it features a singing saw. how cool is that?

found in this excellent blog entry on the FMA today.

thanks to everyone who tuned in last night! and if you missed it, be sure to listen next week. hopefully I won’t be so nervous next time.

summer song

because I just know I’m about to have this stuck in my head for all of Marketing. and it’s described as a love poem to James Murphy.

off to class!

the start of something

Posted in free music with tags , on August 30, 2009 by Kayla

this one’s an old one but my roommate was playing it this morning and in honor of certain events in her life, I think it’s worth sharing.

“The Start of Something” by Voxtrot is cute and vaguely Smiths-y. you can download it here from Prefix, or at least I think so. let me know if that link doesn’t work. I downloaded it earlier this year but I’m not sure where…

also radio programming is supposed to start up this week, but I’m still not totally sure when my show is since I had to work through the meeting today. I will post the time as soon as I know, though!

but now it’s time to unwind from a very very long night at work and maybe whip up a podcast if I feel like it.

this just in

Creative Commons has uploaded about 50 new tracks to the Free Music Archive, with tons of small names and some big names (Nine Inch Nails, Beastie Boys, David Byrne, etc.)

I’m very happy to see the archive growing and am excited to see what CC can add.

in other news, go pick up the free Lefse record compilation ASAP. it is very good. I’m really digging Neon Indian’s remix of the Silent League (what a surprise) so you should check it out.

since school will be starting up in a week, I’ve been pretty busy but I’m thinking about making a very retro-inspired mini-mix sometime soon since I’m not sure an August podcast will happen. but I also thought about doing a walk-to-class mix because I hate walking to class alone without music. stay tuned, I guess.

Kurt Vile live at WFMU

Posted in free music with tags , , , on July 19, 2009 by Kayla

so I’m back from my beach vacation, rested and a little bit darker. I finally got to some of the music I’d downloaded but not listened to.

one such thing was Kurt Vile’s set for WFMU about a year go. Vile’s “Freeway” has been blowing up lately and with good reason. but this old set is great too, dark and moving psychedelic folk music. I remember really liking “Taking the Farm” from Vile’s band, the War on Drugs, about a million years ago and Vile does in fact seem to be a “constant hitmaker.”

listen to it here at the Free Music Archive. You can also get “Freeway” at the FMA as well.

p.s. new song from Vile’s forthcoming album available at Matador Records.
