tin and string

Posted in free music with tags , , , on October 25, 2009 by Kayla

a droning noise jam for your Sunday morning hangover, courtesy of Ashtray Navigations and the FMA. windy and slightly eerie, would make the perfect score to an adaptation of one of Lovecraft’s short stories.

i’m in love with a ripper

Posted in free music with tags , on October 19, 2009 by Kayla

perfect for walking to class on these chilly fall mornings. takesĀ  a second to kick in but then sounds really nice through headphones when you’re half awake and staring down two midterms.

download/listen below courtesy of the FMA.

weird monday

in honor of the FMA’s new embedd-able player, some new music from Tonstartssbandht (that is a pain to type out).

perfect if you’re in the mood for some weird ambient goodness. you should remember them from the amazing “Black Country.” I think it was on one of the summer mixes I had up.

let’s hope this thing works!

party breaksss

Posted in free music with tags , on August 23, 2009 by Kayla

Knife sample + Heart sample + hip hop + weird cartoonish intro = Party Breaksss by AK Slaughter, another diamond in the rough courtesy of the Free Music Archive. it’s kind of like if Girl Talk had rappers (one part Salt-n-Pepa and one part Beastie Boys) that abbreviate ‘pretentious’ to ‘pretentch.’

more music from the Baltimore duo at their myspace and on the Free Music Archive.

p.s. the good stuff starts a minute or two in on the FMA track, so stay with it. the version on myspace is a little cleaner.

this just in

Creative Commons has uploaded about 50 new tracks to the Free Music Archive, with tons of small names and some big names (Nine Inch Nails, Beastie Boys, David Byrne, etc.)

I’m very happy to see the archive growing and am excited to see what CC can add.

in other news, go pick up the free Lefse record compilation ASAP. it is very good. I’m really digging Neon Indian’s remix of the Silent League (what a surprise) so you should check it out.

since school will be starting up in a week, I’ve been pretty busy but I’m thinking about making a very retro-inspired mini-mix sometime soon since I’m not sure an August podcast will happen. but I also thought about doing a walk-to-class mix because I hate walking to class alone without music. stay tuned, I guess.

Kurt Vile live at WFMU

Posted in free music with tags , , , on July 19, 2009 by Kayla

so I’m back from my beach vacation, rested and a little bit darker. I finally got to some of the music I’d downloaded but not listened to.

one such thing was Kurt Vile’s set for WFMU about a year go. Vile’s “Freeway” has been blowing up lately and with good reason. but this old set is great too, dark and moving psychedelic folk music. I remember really liking “Taking the Farm” from Vile’s band, the War on Drugs, about a million years ago and Vile does in fact seem to be a “constant hitmaker.”

listen to it here at the Free Music Archive. You can also get “Freeway” at the FMA as well.

p.s. new song from Vile’s forthcoming album available at Matador Records.

the Bats at Primavera Sound

Posted in free music with tags , , , on June 24, 2009 by Kayla

for your lazy summer mornings/early afternoons, the Free Music Archive has a fantastic set the Bats did at Primavera Sound. it’s perfect 80s jangle pop to listen to as you drag yourself out of bed and try to decide which pair of cutoffs and old camp tee you’re going to wear today. think R.E.M. by way of New Zealand. your dad probably would have loved them.

yeah, I like dad music.
