update: Passion Pit

Posted in albums on May 25, 2009 by Kayla

ok I’ve listened to “Better Things” like a dozen times since the first listen to Chunk of Change. but I still don’t really like the rest. yet.

I tried to find a video to post but just ended up watching Youtube videos of high-school kids recording themselves driving to the mall.

but better things are coming! (get it?)

video: Shane Tutmarc

Here’s that promised Shane Tutmarc video. I think I played this like 40 times in one day in April.

Tutmarc used to make music under the name Dolour, now he performs with family members (brothers? don’t remember) in Shane Tutmarc and the Traveling Mercies. KEXP had their “Hey, Lazarus!” as a song of the day a few months back and a quick Google just told me he put out his own album earlier this month…which apparently you can stream at his website. It sounds a lot more country and blues influenced than his earlier work, although I guess you could see that coming from his last Dolour album.

He also has some new, kind of awkward looking facial hair.

All the CDs and shirts are on sale, apparently. Maybe I’ll get a Traveling Mercies shirt (I already have the Dolour shirt), the artwork is cool.

Anyway, this video is fantastic, so watch it.

video: Telekinesis!

I got into Telekinesis! (although they may have dropped the !, I don’t know) earlier this year with “Coast of Carolina.” I have a strange thing for one-man Seattle power pop bands (see my steadfast love of Dolour, which reminds me that I ought to throw a Shane Tutmarc video up). Anyway, they (Michael Benjamin Lerner + band) make kind of cheesy power pop that I really like. And “Coast of Carolina” works for someone who really wants to be on the coast of Carolina right now.

BUT this video is “One Step Forward,” which I just heard but I like well enough. And it’s a pretty good video. So, enjoy. And expect some Shane Tutmarc later–there’s an absolutely amazing cover of a Tina Turner song that I have in mind.

EDIT: further research has uncovered an even better Telekinesis video. Absolutely adorable!

albums: Chunk of Change

Finally got around to listening to Passion Pit’s “Chunk of Change” EP and was, well, not that impressed. I know everyone’s been abuzz but really? Sure, “Sleepyhead” is pretty engaging and I like “Better Things” decently. Overall, though, it’s just an ok record. I guess falsetto vocals just aren’t my thing. And they’re cute little Brooklyn hipsters and all but just not really cutting it. I could get their sound by playing Cut Copy and Of Montreal and a Casio keyboard at the same time.

Maybe it just takes a couple of listens? I don’t know. I think it’s the vocals.

obsession: Neon Indian

Psychic Chasms EP due out soon

Psychic Chasms EP due out "soon"

I know they’ve been blowing up in the blogosphere but Neon Indian has dominated my headphones for a month or two now, ever since I heard “Deadbeat Summer,” which my summer is slowly turning into. They’ve got five songs streaming on their myspace, you can find a few for download at Gorilla vs. Bear, and there’s a couple awkward fan videos on youtube. I think “6669 (I don’t know if you know)” is tying “Deadbeat Summer” for my favorite.

Anyway, if you like “dreamwave” or whatever they’re calling this new disco-electro-noise-new wave stuff, you should check them out. And yes, they have that whole mystery band thing going on, which is cool, I guess.

hello, world

this is probably like blog #8 for me, but what the heck, right?

I have a lot of spare time in the summer when I am far (ok not that far but far enough) away from my darling college city of Charleston, SC. thus, time to watch movies, listen to music, and scour the Internet for god-knows-what.

in the fall, I’ll be hosting my own radio show. until then, my journalistic voice will have to do the talking for me.
